The museum is the first branch of the Imperial War Museum to be located in the north of England and remains one of the most visited cultural attractions in Greater Manchester with over 259,000 visitors in 2025 alone.
IWM North is especially popular with families, history enthusiasts, students, couples, and visitors exploring Salford Quays as part of a wider Manchester visit.

Things to Do at IWM North Manchester
The Big Picture Show
The Big Picture Show is the centrepiece of the IWM North visitor experience and one of the most memorable free attractions in Manchester. Every hour, the museum's main gallery lights are dimmed and visitors are treated to an award-winning 360-degree audio-visual experience. Powerful images of conflict are projected directly onto the gallery walls, ceiling, and floor — accompanied by immersive surround sound, music, and personal recordings from people who lived through war.
The Big Picture Show rotates through different themes throughout the day, covering different conflicts, periods, and perspectives. Using surround sound, projected digital moving images and photographs, the Big Picture Show brings a broad range of perspectives into poignant focus, reflecting not only on the immediate effects of war, but also on what happens when the guns stop firing. It is widely regarded as one of the most powerful free visitor experiences in the north of England.
Spies, Lies and Deception Exhibition
The current 2026 featured exhibition at IWM North is the Spies, Lies and Deception exhibition — a free and family-friendly exploration of espionage and deception from the First World War to the present day. Young recruits can visit the "Mission Room" to embark on a top-secret exhibition trail, piecing together information to find out if they have what it takes to succeed in the world of spies. The exhibition is one of the most engaging and interactive displays at IWM North in 2026 and is suitable for both children and adults.
Climb the AirShard Tower
The AirShard is one of the three distinctive shards that make up the IWM North building. Climb the 180 steps of the iconic AirShard and stand almost 100ft (30.48m) in the air and enjoy amazing views of the Manchester skyline for only £1.20. The AirShard provides panoramic views across the Manchester Ship Canal, Salford Quays, MediaCityUK, and the wider Greater Manchester skyline — one of the best elevated viewpoints in the city for photography.
Explore 2,000 Historic Artefacts
The IWM North collection contains over 2,000 items spanning conflicts from the First World War through to the present day. The collection is quite vast, totalling around 2,000 items from weapons used during World War I to artefacts recovered from the rubble of the World Trade Center in New York. The suitcase wall — featuring old suitcases once used by soldiers — is one of the most moving displays and is consistently highlighted by visitors as a highlight of their visit.
Learning Studio and Family Activities
IWM North is one of the most family-friendly free museums in Greater Manchester. Get creative in the Learning Studio (which also has a soft play area for younger visitors) and make a crafty souvenir to take home. The museum also offers seasonal activities and events during school holidays, making it an ideal destination for families visiting Manchester with children of all ages.
WaterShard Café and Kitchen
The WaterShard Café and Kitchen inside IWM North offers a relaxed dining area with hot and cold food, drinks, children's portions, and the unique ration bag menu — a fun and educational food experience for younger visitors. The café overlooks the Manchester Ship Canal and provides a comfortable place to rest during your visit. An indoor picnic area is also available at weekends and during school holidays for visitors who prefer to bring their own food.
The Architecture of IWM North — Daniel Libeskind
The IWM North building is one of the most architecturally significant structures in the north of England. The building itself exhibits a highly complex geometry. The design represents a globe shattered by war and broken into shards. The Earth Shard is the main gallery of the building, the Water Shard an event space, while the Air Shard is a large tower and entrance. Sloping floors and ceilings induce disorientation similar to that experienced in war.
This deliberate architectural disorientation — where floors slope unexpectedly and ceilings angle in unusual directions — creates a powerful physical metaphor for the disruptive and disorientating nature of conflict. The building is widely regarded as one of Daniel Libeskind's finest works and draws architecture enthusiasts from across the world.
The three shards of the building — Earth, Water, and Air — represent the three environments in which modern conflict takes place. Even before entering the museum, visitors can appreciate the extraordinary exterior design as they approach along the Trafford Wharf waterfront.
History of IWM North Manchester
IWM North was established on 5 July 2002 and was the first branch of the Imperial War Museum to open in the north of England. The site on Trafford Wharf Road was chosen for its powerful historical significance — the area is now home to The Lowry cultural centre and the MediaCityUK development, which stand opposite the museum at Salford Quays. During World War II, Trafford Park was a key industrial centre and was consequently heavily bombed during the Manchester Blitz in 1940 — making the location deeply connected to the museum's themes of conflict and its impact on civilian life.
IWM North is one of five branches of the Imperial War Museum network, which also includes Churchill War Rooms, HMS Belfast, IWM Duxford, and IWM London. Since opening, it has welcomed millions of visitors and has become one of Manchester's most important and respected cultural institutions.
