Getting from Sale to Manchester City Centre: Tram, Bus or Car

One of the things our guests love about staying at Cornerstones is how easy it is to reach Manchester from our quiet corner of Sale. You get leafy streets, a peaceful night’s sleep and a hearty breakfast, with the city only a short journey away.

After welcoming guests for decades, we’re often asked the same question over breakfast: “What’s the best way into town?” Here’s our honest guide to all three options.

Option 1: By tram (our top recommendation)

For most guests, the Metrolink tram is the easiest way into the city. A tram stop is only about a 5-minute walk from our front door, and trams run roughly every 12 minutes through the day.

  • Journey time: around 20 to 30 minutes to the city centre, depending on where you’re going
  • Where you’ll arrive: the line runs through Cornbrook and Deansgate-Castlefield to St Peter’s Square and Piccadilly Gardens, so you’re dropped right in the heart of the city
  • Best for: shopping, restaurants, museums, theatres, and anyone who’d rather not hunt for a parking space

Our tips:

  • Tap in and out with a contactless card or phone to pay, and check the Bee Network fare calculator for current prices.
  • Sit upstairs-style at the front if you like a view. The ride runs through some surprisingly green parts of south Manchester.
  • Check the Bee Network or TfGM website before you travel. Planned engineering works occasionally mean some stops are closed or that you have to change trams.

Option 2: By bus

There’s a bus stop right outside Cornerstones, which makes the bus a simple door-to-door option if you don’t want to walk to the tram.

  • Journey time: around 40 minutes, depending on traffic
  • Best for: guests who like to see the suburbs on the way in, or who want to avoid walking to the tram stop with luggage
  • Worth knowing: buses are slower than the tram at rush hour, as they share the road with everyone else

Routes and timetables change, so check the current services on the Bee Network app or website.

Option 3: By car

Sale is only about 5 to 6 miles from the city centre, so driving can take as little as 15 to 20 minutes outside busy periods. We also offer free parking at Cornerstones, so your car is safe while you explore.

  • Best for: guests with mobility needs, families with young children, or anyone planning a day trip beyond the centre, such as the Peak District or Cheshire
  • Watch out for: rush-hour traffic on the main roads in and out of the city, and city-centre parking charges, which can add up over a day

Our tip: if you want a car for the countryside but not for the city, leave it with us and take the tram on the days you’re in Manchester.

A few local tips from your hosts

  • Arriving late or leaving early? Ask us about the last trams and the best times to travel.
  • Heading to a concert or match? Trams get very busy on event days, so allow extra time.
  • Not sure where to go? We’re always happy to point you towards our favourite spots, whether that’s a good place for dinner in Sale or a hidden gem in the city centre.

What I checked: The trip details come from public listings and travel sites. The guest house listing describes a bus stop outside, a 40-minute bus journey into Manchester, and a 30-minute tram journey, and says the tram stop is a 5-minute walk away with trams running every 12 minutes. A travel-planning site gives roughly 21 minutes by tram to Piccadilly Gardens and about 15 minutes by car, and notes that Bee Network operates the buses. I didn’t add exact fares or bus route numbers, because they change and I couldn’t confirm them. Please fill in your nearest tram stop’s name and the bus numbers, and check them against TfGM before publishing. Cornerstones Guest House, Sale, +3

I can also put this in a file, or write a short Instagram or Google Business Profile version to promote it.
