Tatton Park Knutsford

1,000 Acres of Historic Deer Park, Gardens & Georgian Mansion Near Manchester

Explore Tatton Park Knutsford

Tatton Park is one of the most spectacular and complete historic estates in the north of England — and one of the most popular day trips from Manchester for families, couples, walkers, dog owners, and history enthusiasts. Located in Knutsford, Cheshire, just 15 to 20 minutes by car from Sale Manchester, Tatton Park spans over 1,000 acres of beautiful deer park and combines a Georgian mansion, 50 acres of formal gardens, a heritage working farm, a Tudor Old Hall, two natural meres, and one of the finest Japanese Gardens in the United Kingdom.

Tatton Park is managed by Cheshire East Council on behalf of the National Trust and remains one of the most visited paid attractions in the North West of England. With hundreds of fallow deer roaming freely across the parkland, seasonal garden displays, historic house tours, rare breed farm animals, and a year-round programme of events, Tatton Park offers a complete and genuinely different outdoor experience just a short drive from Greater Manchester.

Whether you are visiting for a relaxed morning walk through the deer park, a full day exploring the mansion and gardens, or a family day out at the working farm and adventure playground, Tatton Park provides one of the richest and most rewarding countryside experiences available within easy reach of Manchester city centre.

What to See and Do at Tatton Park

Walk Through the 1,000-Acre Deer Park

The parkland at Tatton Park is the estate's most accessible and most loved feature — 1,000 acres of sweeping open landscape where hundreds of fallow deer roam freely throughout the year. Walking through the deer park is one of the most peaceful and memorable outdoor experiences available near Manchester, and the sight of herds of deer grazing across the open grassland against a backdrop of ancient woodland is genuinely unlike anything available in Greater Manchester itself.

Walkers and cyclists can enter the parkland completely free of charge on foot or by bicycle, making it one of the best free outdoor destinations near Manchester for families and dog walkers. Dogs are welcome in the parkland on short leads — limited to one dog per adult — and the wide open paths make it ideal for morning walks, afternoon rambles, and dog-friendly weekend outings.

Activities permitted in the parkland include walking, cycling, horse riding (£8 per horse), picnicking by the water's edge and in woodland, and nature photography. Sailing and windsurfing on Tatton Mere is permitted during high season from 28 March to 25 October 2026 for sailboards and dinghies up to 16ft. Fishing on the west bank of Tatton Mere costs £10 per adult and £6 per child during high season.

Explore the 50-Acre Historic Gardens

Tatton Park's formal gardens cover 50 acres and represent over 300 years of garden design evolution. The gardens are widely regarded as one of the finest historic garden collections in the north of England — combining structured formal design, rare plant collections, ornamental water features, and one of the UK's most celebrated Japanese Gardens in a single continuous landscape.

Key garden highlights include:

  • The Japanese Garden — one of the most authentic and complete Japanese gardens in the United Kingdom, featuring a traditional Shinto temple, tea house, stone lanterns, koi pond, and authentic Japanese planting design
  • The Italian Garden — formal terraced design with geometric parterre planting, urns, and classical architectural features
  • The Walled Kitchen Garden — historic walled growing area with seasonal vegetables, cutting flowers, and heritage plant varieties
  • The Fernery — Victorian glass fernery housing a collection of tree ferns and exotic plants
  • The Rose Garden and woodland walks with seasonal planting throughout spring and summer

Garden single attraction tickets cost £11 per adult and £9 per child aged 4 to 15 in 2026. National Trust members, RHS members, Historic Houses members, and Tatton Garden Society members receive free garden entry. A saving of 10% is available when booking online in advance at tattonpark.org.uk.

Tour the Georgian Egerton Mansion

The neo-classical Egerton Mansion at Tatton Park dates from the early 1800s and is one of the finest Georgian country houses open to the public in the north of England. The mansion was home to the well-travelled Egerton family and houses their extraordinary collections of fine art, Gillow furniture, silverware, ceramics, and one of the most impressive private libraries in England — with over 8,000 books on display in the Library room alone.

Tours of the mansion explore the principal rooms, the servants' quarters, and the fascinating contrast between the upstairs family lifestyle and the downstairs working life of the estate. The current 2026 special exhibition at the mansion is the Beyond the View exhibition. Allow between 1.25 and 1.5 hours for a full mansion visit.

Mansion admission in 2026 costs £15 per adult and £10 per child aged 4 to 15. Family tickets range from £25 to £34 depending on group size. National Trust members receive free mansion entry but pay parkland vehicle entry charges.

Visit the Heritage Working Farm

Tatton Park's working farm is one of the most authentic heritage farm experiences in the north of England — recreating the agricultural life of the 1930s with rare breed farm animals, traditional farmyard buildings, and historic working machinery including a recently restored steam engine.

The farm holds rare breed accreditation and is home to a fascinating collection of traditional British farm animals including rare breed cattle, sheep, pigs, and poultry. Children particularly enjoy meeting the farm animals, watching farmworkers carry out traditional tasks, and learning about agricultural heritage and conservation practices.

Farm single attraction tickets cost £11 per adult and £9 per child in 2026. Allow at least one hour for a farm visit. Note that the farm entrance requires a 10-minute walk down from the main car park. The farm is free for children under 4 and for carers.

Explore the Tudor Old Hall

The Tudor Old Hall at Tatton Park was the original manor house on the estate — built around the early 1400s on the site of the old Tatton village. The hall was last inhabited in 1958 and is available for guided tours on selected opening days and for specific events. Guided tours are included in the admission price and cover the fascinating stories of the characters who lived in the hall over the centuries, from Tudor times through to the 20th century.

Adventure Playground and Family Activities

Tatton Park's adventure playground is one of the most popular family facilities on the estate and is a particular highlight for younger visitors. Located within the parkland, the adventure playground provides a safe and engaging outdoor play environment for children of all ages.

Additional family-friendly activities at Tatton Park include:

  • Seasonal guided garden walks covering the history of garden design and plants
  • Farm activities and animal feeding sessions
  • Picnic areas throughout the parkland and by the water's edge
  • Cycling routes across the estate — free entry for cyclists
  • Nature trails and wildlife watching by the meres
  • Seasonal events including the annual RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park

The Stableyard — Shopping and Dining

The Stableyard at Tatton Park houses a collection of independent shops, a café, and restaurant facilities for visitors. The Stableyard provides a comfortable base for refreshments before or after exploring the estate and offers a range of food, drinks, and Tatton Park merchandise.

History of Tatton Park

Tatton Park has been an important Cheshire estate for over 600 years. The original manor of Tatton was settled in medieval times, and the Tudor Old Hall — built around the early 1400s — represents the earliest surviving structure on the estate. The current neo-classical mansion was developed during the early 19th century by the Egerton family, who transformed the estate into one of the most fashionable and well-appointed country houses in Cheshire.

The Egerton family were enthusiastic travellers and collectors — bringing back art, furniture, ceramics, and botanical specimens from across Europe and beyond, many of which remain on display in the mansion today. The Japanese Garden was created in the early 20th century and reflects the Edwardian fascination with Japanese design and culture.

The estate was transferred to the National Trust and Cheshire County Council in 1958 following the death of the last Lord Egerton. Today it is managed by Cheshire East Council on behalf of the National Trust and remains one of the most complete and well-preserved historic estates in the north of England. Every entry fee paid at Tatton Park contributes to the ongoing preservation and maintenance of this extraordinary heritage site.

Best Time to Visit Tatton Park

Spring is one of the best times to visit for garden displays — spring bulbs, blossom, and fresh green foliage transform the gardens and parkland from March through May. The Japanese Garden is particularly beautiful during spring.

Summer is the peak season for Tatton Park with the full estate open including sailing on the mere, all attractions operating, the RHS Tatton Park Flower Show (typically July), and the most extended opening hours.

Autumn brings spectacular tree colours to the parkland and woodland areas — making September through November one of the most photogenic and atmospheric times to visit for walking and photography.

Winter offers a quieter and more peaceful experience with the deer park at its most atmospheric in frost and mist. The annual Christmas at Tatton Park events are consistently popular with families visiting from Greater Manchester.
